NEW YORK
World leaders have gathered in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly as conflicts, artificial intelligence and rising tensions between major powers dominate discussions.
The Middle East remains one of the biggest concerns, with the United States and Iran holding their first shuttle talks in months amid the ongoing conflict. Diplomats are also watching developments around the Strait of Hormuz and their possible impact on global energy supplies.
The war in Ukraine is another major issue at the gathering. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is in New York seeking continued international support as fighting continues.
Artificial intelligence is also taking an increasingly prominent place at the UN. Technology leaders are expected to brief the Security Council on the opportunities and risks created by increasingly powerful AI systems.
Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the United States is adding another important diplomatic storyline, with trade, technology and wider relations between Washington and Beijing expected to feature prominently.
With several major global issues unfolding simultaneously, attention now turns to whether this week’s diplomatic meetings can produce concrete agreements.
What do you think should be the biggest priority for world leaders right now?
