Nigeria is mourning after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed in Ondo State during a routine flight from Benin City to Lagos, killing all 25 people aboard.
The Nigerian Air Force confirmed Tuesday that the ATR-42 aircraft was carrying 20 passengers and five crew members when it crashed. There were no survivors. The confirmation followed earlier reports that had placed the number of people aboard at 32.
The aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers at about 8:13 GMT on Monday while travelling toward Lagos. Search-and-rescue teams were subsequently deployed and the wreckage was located near the coastal community of Igbokoda in Ondo State.
President Tinubu Orders Investigation
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The president also declared three days of national mourning following the deaths of the military personnel.
The investigation is expected to examine the aircraft’s condition, maintenance history, flight operations, weather conditions, communications and other factors that may have contributed to the accident.
The Nigerian Air Force has also begun its own investigation into the incident.
A Tragic Loss for Nigeria’s Military
The crash represents a major loss for the Nigerian military, particularly because the aircraft was carrying personnel on an official mission.
The Ministry of Defence described the incident as a deeply painful loss, while government officials have expressed condolences to the families and colleagues of those who died.
The accident has also renewed public attention on the safety of military aviation in Nigeria.
While military aircraft operate under different conditions from commercial passenger aircraft, crashes involving service aircraft can have serious consequences because they frequently involve personnel travelling for operational duties.
Search and Rescue Operation
After communication with the aircraft was lost, emergency teams began searching for the missing plane.
The wreckage was eventually discovered around Igbokoda, allowing authorities to begin recovery and identification operations.
The location of the crash presented additional challenges because of the surrounding terrain and coastal environment.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information as investigators establish what happened during the final stage of the flight.
Families Await Answers
Beyond the official investigation, families of the victims are now facing the difficult task of mourning their loved ones.
The circumstances of the crash are likely to remain a major public concern until investigators establish the cause.
Aviation accidents can result from multiple factors, and officials have not yet announced a definitive cause for this crash.
For now, authorities are urging the public to rely on verified information as the investigation continues.
LaGistTV Take
The immediate priority should be a transparent investigation that establishes exactly what happened and whether anything could have been done to prevent the tragedy.
The families of those who died deserve answers, while the Nigerian military deserves an investigation capable of identifying any technical, operational or safety failures and preventing a repeat.
