Millions of Brazilians headed to polling stations today in one of the country’s most closely watched elections in recent history. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is seeking another term while facing strong competition from Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. Economic concerns, public debt, inflation and corruption allegations have dominated the campaign.
Political analysts say the election could significantly influence Brazil’s economic policies, trade relationships and international partnerships over the coming years. If no candidate secures more than 50% of the vote, a runoff election will be required later this month.
