On Monday night, while Mbappé was at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, a clip of him joking about a meme went viral on Chinese social media. The meme puts his face on a figure described as a “Chinese dictator” who resembles Mao Zedong. Chinese brands have cut him off one by one, the parent group of CCTV has suspended La Liga broadcasts, and he has now apologised, though many still don’t know exactly what he said. Do you think the backlash is fair?
